Mech-Tronix spindle applications

Automotive production
To process engine pistons in groups of four, a transfer line required a compact finishing station for the wrist-pin bore. The spindles at each of the four processing positions had to be highly accurate and vibration free to achieve the end user’s surface finish needs.
They also had to be mounted close together and maintain a center-to-center dimension of ±.001".

Four R.T. Gilman custom Mech-Tronix 350 motorized spindles were mounted on a hardened way slide. Their integral motor design minimized the number of moving parts, and the spindle shaft and rotor were precision balanced before assembly. Precision SKF ABEC 7/9 bearings, a triplex set in the spindle nose and a duplex in the rear, delivered rotational accuracy with a maximum runout of .0001". Liquid cooling of the spindle housing provided a clean and stable environment for the bearings and motor. The spindles were extremely low in vibration.

Co-axial designs
A Mech-Tronix spindle can be a "spindle-within-a-spindle" with two rotating shafts independent of each other, driven by an independent rotor/stator and a direct drive unit. Examples of applications include cable winding and mill/grind single station processing.

High HP units
Special applications can be built for heavy metal removal or high power. Applications include: rough milling, large cutter diameters as well as those using grinding and rough boring operations. These spindles typically range from 25 to 50 HP in output.
