Grinding solutions

Since its founding in 1928, GAMFIOR a unit of SKF has been engaged in high precision mechanics.

Solution for horizontal grinding

The offering for horizontal grinding includes two HF spindle series, a new motorized spindle for external grinding and high precision motorized working head. GAMFIOR's unmatched, long-term experience with ceramic bearings makes it possible to offer these spindles a long-life grease lubrication option that eliminates all the problems tied to management of a lubrication control unit.

Customer benefits

Unsurpassed spindle versatility Wide power range. With the power range available in SKF grinding spindles, you can use the same spindle for several different operations, saving time in machine set-up during changeovers.

High speed

The spindle ndm (speed per diameter) is very high, which means that the ratio of the bearing diameter versus the speed gives the system a very high stiffness compared to other spindles.

Easy installation

SKF spindle systems can be easily used to upgrade a machine with a traditional belt driven spindle or simply to substitute another integrally motorized spindle. In fact, the spindle is compatible with all of the most popular lubrication units, and it does not require any specialized treatment
for the motor coolant (temperature control or type of media).

Thermal stability

For precision spindle applications, the system's thermal stability is of top priority. In fact, the elongation of the spindle nose resulting from thermal growth is small enough not to compromise the quality of an operation where the axial position of the wheel must be within tolerance (e.g. groove of the bearings).

Low vibrations

All the rotating parts of the spindle are balanced to G04 grade, and in order to assure that spindle vibration is as low as possible, all components are dynamically balanced and then verified after final assembly.

High stiffness

SKF’s High Precision Bearing design configurations, proven in hundreds of applications, provide for a very stiff spindle both in static and in dynamic modes. On each spindle model an accurate dynamic analysis of the harmonic frequencies is done; each spindle's natural vibration frequencies are designed to occur far from the working speed range.

Easy substitution

Change-out with similar SKF models is extremely fast: the converter drive "recognizes" the spindle from a special code in the connector, and the operator does not have to make any adjustment.

Long service life

The spindles are designed for a long service life: the construction itself is robust, and because all the parts are standardized, you can repair the spindle repeatedly without affecting quality.

Spindle engineering information

Horizontal grinding spindle characteristics—internal applications

The GHP model for internal applications ranges in size from an 80 mm spindle diameter with 0,6 kW and a maximum speed of 180 000 rpm to a 150 mm spindle diameter with 40 kW and a maximum speed of 30 000 rpm.

The GNS model for internal applications ranges in size from a 100 mm spindle diameter with 2 kW and a maximum speed of 105 000 rpm to a 170 mm spindle diameter with 36,5 kW and a maximum speed of 18 000 rpm.

Horizontal grinding spindles—external applications

OG for external grinding

Although the speed is low, to perform an outstanding external grinding operation is quite difficult: every light vibration is amplified by the wheel dimension and becomes really evident on the machined piece. Only the smart combination between robust bearing configuration and particular motor with low losses on the rotor and therefore less heat on it made possible the development of motorized spindles that allows impressive improvement in the machine’s capabilities and reductions of masses and dimensions.

Horizontal grinding spindle characteristics—external applications

The OG model for external applications ranges in size from a 150 mm spindle diameter with 7,5 kW and a maximum speed of 6 000 rpm to a 380 mm spindle diameter with 60 kW and a maximum speed of 1 200 rpm.

Solution for vertical grinding

The standard spindle range for vertical grinding has been developed to enable vertical applications.

It includes special solutions to avoid dirt penetration inside and consists of a spindle range for internal grinding and motorized main spindle ranges.

Also the lubrication and coolant circuits have been redesigned in order to be effective in vertical position.

Furthermore the spindle design takes into consideration the different vibration behavior of a rotating shaft from horizontal and vertical positions.

Besides the standard vertical spindles, SKF can also design special applications. Contact our application engineers for any requests you may have.

Vertical grinding spindle characteristics—internal applications

The GHP/V model for internal applications ranges in size from a 100 mm spindle diameter with 2 kW and a maximum speed of 105 rpm to a 150 mm spindle diameter with 40 kW, a maximum speed of 30 rpm and HSK 63.

Vertical grinding spindle characteristics—external applications

The PHT/V model for external applications ranges in size from a 250 x 240 mm spindle diameter with 18 kW and a maximum speed of 1 000 rpm to a 200 x 200 mm spindle diameter with 30 kW and a maximum speed of 6 000 rpm.

Solution for surface grinding spindles

The long-term experience with versatile grinding spindles having the motor in the back has allowed the design of a new spindle range suitable for surface grinding and deep bore grinding.

A special coupling system makes the spindle a modular system suitable for any application.

The main spindle in the front has a high stiffness due to the rigid bearing preload, and the motor in the back could be a standard one (self cooled for a maximal speed of 3000 rpm) or an optional liquid cooled motor suitable for higher speed and power. (Please ask our technical staff for more information.)

Motorized surface grinding spindle characteristics

The MG model ranges in size from a 50 mm spindle diameter and 200 mm spindle length with 0,55 kW and a maximum speed of 3 000 rpm to a 140 mm spindle diameter and 1524 spindle length with 5,5 kW and a maximum speed of 3 600 rpm.

Option motor water coolant

The MG model also offers the option of adding a motor water coolant. This makes the model with the 50 mm spindle diameter and 200 mm spindle length have 4 kW with a maximum speed of 20 000 rpm. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the spindle diameter is 120 mm and spindle length is 1000 with 7 kW and a maximum speed of 6 000 rpm.

Hydrostatic and hydrodynamic spindles

Gamfior has also a long experience in hydrostatic and hydrodynamic spindles.

GAMFIOR hydrostatic bearing spindles have the following advantages in comparison with ball bearing spindles:

  • Improvement of the dynamic stiffness features
  • Constant finishing surface level
  • Increasing of the run-out precision due to the lack of mechanical components between the spindle housing and the rotating shaft
  • No vibrations due to direct contact between mechanical parts
  • Autonomous thermal stabilization
  • Compared with ball bearings, longer hydrostatic bearings life due to the lack of wear
  • No stops due to the frequent bearing substitutions mounted on conventional spindles.

A hydrostatic spindle requires high pressure oil equipment.

Standard hydrostatic spindle for internal grinding—characteristics

The EISG model for internal grinding ranges in size from a 120 mm spindle diameter with 4.5 kW and a maximum speed of 60 000 rpm to a 170 mm spindle diameter with 17.5 kW and a maximum speed of 15 000 rpm.

Standard hydrostatic spindle for external grinding—characteristics

The EISG model for external grinding ranges in size from a 170 mm spindle diameter with 17.5 kW and a maximum speed of 1 500 rpm to a 380 mm spindle diameter with 62 kW and a maximum speed of 3 000 rpm.

Special hydrostatic with horizontal and vertical main spindle—characteristics

The EISG model with horizontal and vertical main spindle ranges in size from a 260 x 260 mm spindle diameter with 4 kW and a maximum speed of 500 rpm to a 170 x 170 mm spindle diameter with 7,5 kW and a maximum speed of 7 500 rpm.

Standard hydrodynamic spindle for external grinding—characteristics

The EIDG model for external grinding ranges in size from a 360 mm spindle diameter with 17.7 kW and a maximum speed of 8 000 to a 300 mm spindle diameter with 21.5 kW and a maximum speed of 50 000 rpm.
